A plumbing emergency rarely happens at a convenient time. A burst pipe, a leaking water heater or an overflowing toilet can soak floors and ceilings in minutes. The good news: a few quick actions can limit the damage before help arrives.
1. Shut off the water
For most homes in Singapore, the main stopcock is near the kitchen or the service yard. Turn it clockwise to cut the supply. For a single fixture — a tap, toilet or water heater — use the isolation valve directly beneath or beside it.
2. Switch off the power if water is near electrics
If water is leaking near power points, your distribution board or an electric water heater, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit. Never touch electrical fittings with wet hands.
3. Contain the leak
- Place a bucket or basin under the drip
- Use old towels to soak up standing water
- Move furniture and electronics clear of the area
4. Relieve the pressure
After shutting the main valve, open the lowest taps in the house to drain the remaining water in the pipes. This eases pressure on a burst section and reduces further spray.
5. Call a 24/7 emergency plumber
Describe what happened, what you have already shut off, and where the water is coming from. Clear access and a quick summary help the plumber arrive prepared.
Keeping calm and acting fast protects your home until a licensed plumber can make a lasting repair.
