It is the bottle-shaped fitting under a sink or basin that holds a plug of water to keep drain odours out of the room. Because it traps water it also collects the sludge that causes slow draining, and its threads and washers give out over time. If yours weeps at the joints, is corroded, or blocks up again soon after clearing, replacing it beats stripping it down repeatedly.
It is worth checking. The braided hoses feeding a sink, basin or cistern are the part most likely to fail suddenly, and when one bursts with nobody home the water keeps running until someone reaches the stopcock. Look for rust spots, kinks, or damp around the crimped ends. If the braid is fraying or discoloured, replace it rather than wait, because the hose is a small job and a flooded flat is not.
More than it looks. Once the seal at the back of a sink or the rim of a basin lifts, water runs behind the counter every time it is used, and the board underneath swells quietly for months before anyone notices. Black staining is mould in old sealant that has already lost its grip. Stripping it out and sealing again properly is small work next to replacing a soaked cabinet.
