Toilet chokes at the floor trap and in the bowl, cleared with a hand cable or a plunger. One bowl had to come off to reach the discharge point: we cleared it, set the bowl back on a new seal and checked the base for leaks.

Try a plunger before anything else. HDB's home care guide says to place it over the waste hole and pump vigorously, and that the blockage is usually cleared after a few pumps. Of the two toilet bowl chokes we have cleared in Bukit Merah, one came clear by plunging and flushed away cleanly over several flushes. For the other we took the bowl off to reach the discharge point, cleared the choke and set the bowl back on a new seal. HDB also asks that solid items such as sanitary pads and diapers never go into the toilet. Clearing a toilet bowl choke is from $80 on our guide prices.
On the bowl we replaced here, the job covered taking out and disposing of the old bowl, fitting a new pan collar to the soil pipe, then bedding, levelling and sealing the new bowl at the base and flush-testing it for leaks.
