It may not be. HDB's home care guide gives two causes of a smelly floor trap: foreign particles trapped in it, or a toilet left unused for a long time, which lets the smell break through the water seal inside the trap. Its fixes are to remove the particles, flush and clean the trap, flush the toilet regularly, and seal the floor trap cover while you are away. When a floor trap is choked, we clear it: the three we have cleared in Sengkang, two in kitchens and one in a toilet, all came clear with a hand cable. Maybe just the bowl. In one Sengkang flat we replaced only the wash basin bowl, sealed it and tested it for leaks; in another we changed the mini valve and flexible hose under the basin along with the bowl. On our guide prices a new basin is from $170 and a flexible hose from $90.
It is the small shut-off valve on the supply pipe. In Sengkang we have fitted one on its own and leak-tested it to confirm the isolation holds, fitted another under a basin together with a new basin bowl and flexible hose, and replaced one on a job where we also changed a 35-litre storage heater and repaired its piping.
